If I buy it, the price will go down—guaranteed!
Yep, it happened again. Something I purchased was reduced in price shortly after I bought it.
In the particular case it was a Kobo ereader, although it doesn’t matter what it is. I buy a stock, it immediately drops a few percent–even on an “up” day. On the rare occasion I buy a vehicle I’ll see pretty much the same one a week later for five grand less. And let’s not even talk about technology…
After all the years and years and many, many, many transactions experiencing this phenomena I should be used to it. But I’m not. One thing has changed. I no longer become angry. It doesn’t do any good.
I’m resigned to my fate. It is obviously my calling to be a bellwether of price change.
A couple weeks ago I went to my local Border’s coffee and bookstore, in the Carrollwood area of Tampa, for a cuppa. Something I do several times a week. While browsing the store I began looking at the ereaders. An almost heretical act for a bibliophile. A pleasant, informed, young woman named Christine demonstrated the Kobo ereader for me. She even, with managerial permission, let me take it outside so I could see how it well it worked in natural light. It was as easy to read in sunlight and shade as it was under the diffused florescent interior lighting.
Since this particular unit was, then, priced at a relatively modest $149 and offered end cost price incentives I bought it.
So, what happened today? Yep, you guessed it. Border’s lowered the price of the Kobo by about $20.
But, I’m not mad. For once , and only once, because of the purchase incentives my end cost was actually a bit below the new reduced price plus local sales tax.
Additionally, I’ve had two weeks to use the Kobo and determine that it meets my needs.
One of the reasons I chose it, aside from price, is its ability to store and display PDF files. Like many marketers I have loads of PDFs. The Kobo is much smaller and lighter than my laptop. And, as it’s not connected to the web there is no danger I’ll click a link in a document and become totally distracted. (for some of us that’s a problem)
Regarding the Kobo, that’s all for now. I will be publishing a complete Kobo review in a few days. Hope to see you here…
